5 Female Poets

"a list of 5" by shenelva Abigail booij

1. Rupi Kaur

You’ve probably already seen her work on Instagram. The poems and illustrations from her book ‘Milk and Honey’ have taken the Internet by storm. The book takes you on a journey through different seasons of Rupi’s life; the hurt, the love, the breakdowns and - finally - the healing.

Each chapter is written with an overwhelming amount of honesty, and perfectly describes how life-changing obstacles - like rape and abuse - ruled her life, and ended up transforming into lessons and growth.

i want to apologize to all the women i have called beautiful
before i’ve called them intelligent or brave
i am sorry i made it sound as though
something as simple as what you’re born with
is all you have to be proud of
when you have broken mountains with your wit
from now on i will say things like
you are resilient, or you are extraordinary
not because i don’t think you’re beautiful
but because i need you to know
you are more than that
— Rupi Kaur, Milk and Honey
i am water

soft enough
to offer life
tough enough
to drown it away
— Rupi Kaur, Milk and Honey

Arise my girl
Come dance with me
On the shores of victory
On the streets of joy
Come wander away with me
Over the path of life
Towards the crossroad of new beginnings
Into the tunnel of life abundantly
Let me guide you around treasures of majesty
Let me show you how you can be completely free
I will be your guide
I’ll look after you from every side
You just arise
